STYLE PROFILE: HILARY ALEXANDER -my article for Vogue-

“I’m not really a minimalist”: così si descrive una delle più importanti giornaliste di moda contemporanee. E vedendola alle sfilate non è difficile crederle: gonne stampate, gioielli etnici, copricapi, occhiali e caschetto mogano sono diventati i segni distintivi di Hilary Alexander. Hilary nasce in Nuova Zelanda, frequenta un corso serale in Arte e Design, e si avvicina al mondo della moda per caso. Il suo primo impiego infatti è all’interno dell’Hong Kong Development Council, poi, proprio a seguito di un viaggio in Cina nel 1969, diventa Fashion Editor per il China Mail. Nel 1982 si trasferisce a Londra, dove tre anni più tardi viene assunta come Fashion Editor dal prestigioso Daily Telegraph, diventando poi direttrice della sezione moda a partire dalla metà degli anni Novanta. Insieme a Suzy Menkes é uno dei simboli del giornalismo di moda inglese.

Nel 2001 è insignita del titolo di Visiting Professor dalla University of the Arts London, responsabile di atenei quali la Central Saint Martins e il London College of Fashion; ottiene poi la Laurea honoris causa in Design dalla Nottingham Trent University. Due volte incoronata British Fashion Journalist of the Year (nel 1998 e nel 2003), ha ricevuto nel 2011 il prestigioso Eugenia Sheppard Media Award dal Council of Fashion Designer americano. Dopo ventisei anni, lo scorso giugno ha lasciato il suo lavoro di Fashion Director del Telegraph per andare in pensione, ma non ha alcuna intenzione di scomparire dal panorama della moda. Continua infatti a scrivere per il Telegraph da free-lance, sul sito cura anche la rubrica Ask Hilary, in cui dispensa ai lettori consigli di stile, è responsabile di un canale televisivo, Hilary Tv, ed è ospite di un reality che sceglie le persone meglio vestite in Gran Bretagna. Dal 2005 è inoltre stylist ufficiale del popolare Britain's Next Top Model, ed ideatrice del programma Behind the Seams: uno sguardo intimo all’intero mondo della moda e alla vita dei più famosi designers. Spirito folk, passo saltellante e sorriso contagioso, Hilary Alexander sembra discostarsi dalla tradizionale immagine un po’ snob, che spesso viene attribuita alle giornaliste di moda. Del resto, tradizionale non lo è mai stata: il suo stile è divertente, energico, colorato, proprio come i suoi articoli. Non è raro trovarla nei backstage delle sfilate a sfiorare i tessuti, a parlare, oltre che con i designers, con gli hair-stylist e i make-up artists, “because they share ideas with the designers (perché condividono idee con gli stilisti)”. Si dichiara workaholic ed è considerata una grande professionista; Diane von Furstenberg ricorda di quando è stata colpita da un faro durante una sua sfilata, e di come, nonostante l’incidente, le abbia dato una recensione positiva. La sua penna acuta e ironica l’ha resa un’icona. Amante delle lunghe passeggiate, dei giardini e dei gatti, Hilary è attualmente impegnata nella stesura della sua biografia. Fanatica di twitter e appassionata viaggiatrice, si dichiara intenzionata a iscriversi alla facoltà di archeologia, da sempre una delle sue passioni, assieme ai vestiti e ai gioielli, of course...

“I’m not really a minimalist,” one of the most important modern fashion journalists says of herself. And seeing her at the fashion shows, it’s not difficult to believe her: her printed skirts, ethnic jewellery, headgear, glasses and mahogany bob have become Hilary Alexander’s trademarks. Hilary was born in New Zealand, where she went to art and design night school, and got into fashion by chance. Her first job was for the Hong Kong Development Council. After a trip to China in 1969, she became Fashion Editor for the China Mail. In 1982, she moved to London, where three years later she became Fashion Editor of the prestigious Daily Telegraph, becoming editor of the fashion section mid-way through the 90s. Alongside Suzy Mendes, she is one of the symbols of British fashion journalism.

In 2001, she was appointed Visiting Professor at the University of the Arts London, working with institutions like Central Saint Martins and the London College of Fashion; she later received an honorary degree in design from Nottingham Trent University. She has twice been crowned British Fashion Journalist of the Year (in 1998 and 2003), and in 2011 received the prestigious Eugenia Sheppard Media Award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America. After 26 years, she retired from her job as Fashion Director of the Telegraph – but she has no intention of disappearing from the fashion scene. She continues to write for the Telegraph as a freelance journalist and has a column, Ask Hilary, which provides readers with style advice. She’s also in charge of a TV channel, Hilary TV, and guest stars on a reality show that chooses the UK’s best dressed person. Since 2005, she’s also been the official stylist on Britain’s Next Top Model and creator of the programme Behind the Seams, an intimate look at the whole world of fashion and the life of the most famous designers. With her folk spirit, bouncy walk and infectious smile, Hilary Alexander is far removed from the traditional image of the slightly snobbish fashion journalist. She’s never been traditional at all in fact: her style is fun, energetic and colourful – just like her articles. She’s often to be found backstage at the fashion shows, feeling the fabrics and talking to the hair and make-up artists as well as the stylists, “because they share ideas with the designers.” She’s a self-confessed workaholic and is known as an incredible professional: Diane von Furstenberg says that when Hilary was hit by a light during her show, she gave her a positive review despite the accident. Her acute, funny writing has made her an icon. A fan of hiking, gardening and cats, Hilary is currently working on a draft of her life story. She’s a Twitter fanatic and a passionate traveller, and says she intends to go to university to study archaeology, which has always been one of her passions – along with clothes and jewellery of course.
